The reality is stark: most boards and leadership teams in the non-profit and social enterprise sector do not have a formal cybersecurity policy. This leaves critical data, vulnerable communities, and organizational continuity exposed at a time when cyber threats are escalating in frequency and sophistication.
This Community of Practice — governed and led by the Canadian Centre for Nonprofit Digital Resilience (CCNDR), Social Economy Through Social Inclusion (SETSI), and Technology Helps — provides a safe, dignified, and solutions-focused environment for open dialogue and shared learning.
The Non-Profit Cybersecurity Community of Practice is a dynamic, sector-wide gathering space for Canada’s non-profits, charities, and social enterprises — convening thought leaders, practitioners, board members, and changemakers committed to protecting the missions that matter most. In today’s interconnected world, trust is the currency of impact — and trust in the digital age is built on strong cybersecurity and digital safety practices. Without them, organizations face growing risks to their operations, reputations, and the communities they serve.
It is a network of networks, uniting diverse leaders who understand that digital resilience is a leadership responsibility, not just a technical concern. Through real-world case studies, peer exchange, and expert guidance, members learn directly from organizations that have successfully implemented protective measures — and from those who have faced and overcome cyber incidents. Each gathering transforms challenges into actionable strategies, equipping participants with the tools to strengthen governance, resilience, and public trust.

1. Equip Leaders for Immediate Impact
Provide non-profit, charity, and social enterprise leaders with clear, practical, and immediately implementable strategies that strengthen organizational digital resilience. This includes offering scenario-based guidance, real-world case studies, and prioritized action plans that leaders can deploy right away to protect their missions.
2. Embed Proactive Cybersecurity Governance
Cultivate a culture of foresight and accountability in cybersecurity governance at both board and senior leadership levels. Empower decision-makers to anticipate risks, set strategic priorities, and embed digital safety into their organization’s governance, policies, and operational DNA.
3. Build a Nationwide, Peer-Led Digital Resilience Network
Establish and sustain a Canada-wide, peer-driven community that equips organizations to:
o Protect and advance their missions in the face of digital threats.
o Safeguard stakeholders, sensitive information, and critical systems.
o Lead with clarity and confidence in an increasingly complex and high-risk digital environment.
4. Amplify Awareness Through Strategic Partnerships
Strengthen the collective voice of partner organizations — the Canadian Centre for Nonprofit Digital Resilience (CCNDR), Social Economy Through Social Inclusion (SETSI), and Technology Helps — by showcasing shared expertise, coordinating outreach, and leveraging joint platforms to maximize visibility and sector-wide influence.
5. Deepen Engagement Across All Networks
Actively engage each organization’s network — including members, impact partners, and clients — by providing meaningful value, timely resources, and benefits that directly address their most pressing digital safety needs, ensuring sustained participation and advocacy.
6. Prioritize Action Over Theory
Focus on practical application by sharing actionable tools, tailored services, and proven frameworks that drive transformative digital safety practices. Ensure nonprofit executive directors and boards can move from learning to doing, embedding resilience into day-to-day operations and long-term strategy.
